Prediction

Since 2008, India has not hosted a WTA Tour competition till the 2022 Chennai Open. In the final, third-seeded player Magda Linette will face off against Linda Fruhvirtova.

A late comeback enabled Czech youngster Fruhvirtova to overcome former French Open semifinalist Nadia Podoroska at the WTA Chennai Open on Saturday, advancing her to her maiden WTA Tour final. The 17-year-old battled back from 2-4 down in the final set to defeat Podoroska 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 53 minutes in a match that featured some of the greatest tennis of the week in front of a packed stadium.

On the other hand, Linette, a former player ranked in the top 35 in the world, won the match on Sunday when Katie Swan was forced to withdraw with a 3-0 deficit in the opening set. The Brit had to withdraw due to heat illness.

Magda Linette typically performs well at Asian WTA Tour events, having advanced to three of her past four finals there (Tokyo, Seoul, Hua Hin). The conditions in these competitions are typically relatively similar and clearly favour the Pole, save from lesser fields. Linette delivered two bagel sets on her way to the Chennai final, only having to go to a tie-break once (by Rebecca Marino).

The 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, who will be playing in her first WTA Tour final, will be on the other side of the net. This week, the young Czech lost the first sets to En-Shuo Liang and Nadia Podoroska but came back to win in three. Fruhvirtova’s highest professional victory to date was a 25K ITF victory in Cancun, thus this would be a significant advancement.

The Pole had recently been in good shape, making it to the 100K final in Grodzisk Mazowiecki and the Cleveland quarterfinals. Fruhvirtova’s development slowed down a little over the summer, but despite beginning in the qualifying draw, she was able to pick herself up and advance to the second round of the US Open. Last year in Cleveland, Linette won their sole matchup head-to-head, but the kid managed to stay competitive.

Fruhvirtova doesn’t quite have the upside of the Pole yet and rather relies on her reliable baseline play. Linette typically finds it difficult to venture beyond of her comfort zone, but when she’s in the zone, she can pick up the pace and drive her opponents off the court. That seems to be what she will have to do in this situation. She should be able to unwind thanks to her experience and four prior WTA Tour finals (including two victories).
