About And Club Career- Atletico Junior, Porto
A professional Colombian footballer who currently plays as a winger for Portuguese Primeira Liga club Porto and the Colombia national team, Luis Diaz was born in Barrancas, La Guajira. It was because of his Wayuu ethnicity that Diaz was given a spot in the 22-man Colombian squad for the Copa Americana de Pueblos Indigenas. Such impressive were his performances throughout the tournament that the Colombian joined Atletico Junior in the year 2016 after a trial period. Immediately after that he was brought into farm team Barranquilla FC. Because Diaz suffered from malnutrition, Barranquilla FC helped him with a diet plan which would make him gain 10 kg.
Diaz’s senior debut came on 26th April, 2016, when he was brought on as a second half-substitute in a 2-1 Categoria Primera B home loss against Deportivo Pereira. He scored his very first senior goal on May 14th which was also a winner for his side in what resulted in a 2-1 home loss for Cucuta Deportivo.
Porto
It was on 10th July, 2019 when Porto signed Diaz on a 5-year contract which would see him play at the Portuguese club till 2024. The club bought 80% of his economic rights for a 7 million Euros fee. Diaz made his debut for Porto on 7th August against FC Krasnodar in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying first leg as a 55th minute substitute. The game concluded with Porto winning 1-0 and then after six days, the Colombian winger scored his first goal in what was a 3-2 loss at the Estadio do Dragao.
His first season at Porto saw him make 50 appearances and score 14 goals, with Porto winning the league along with the Taca de Portugal.
International Career
Diaz represented Colombia at the U20 level in the 2017 South American U-20 Championship. His performance resulted in him getting called up to the full squad on 27th August, 2018, for friendly games against Venezuela and Argentina. His first international goal came as an equaliser in a 2-1 loss to South Korea in a friendly match.
Diaz was added to Colombia’s squad for the 2021 Copa America which took place in Brazil. The tournament ended with Colombia finishing third behind Argentina and Brazil, and with Diaz as joint top goal-scorer of the South American tournament with Lionel Messi.
