After this season, Bill Belichick will most likely leave the New England Patriots. In the meantime, by firing Brandon Staley on Friday, the Los Angeles Chargers gave themselves a good start in their hunt for a new head coach.

Belichick, 71, is concentrating on the next four games of the 3-10 Patriots’ 2023 season and has refrained from discussing his future. But if he wants to stay in coaching for the upcoming campaign, there are already a few positions where he is thought to be a good fit. That includes the Chargers and Carolina, who let go of Frank Reich earlier in the season.

In the upcoming weeks, there may be more positions added to the list. People find the Chargers to be a desirable location, and not simply because of the climate in Southern California. A trio of skill players that includes wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back Austin Ekeler is led by franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.

The larger problem, particularly recently, has been a defence that under defensive-minded Staley was unable to maintain leads, much less be dominating. As a result, on Thursday night, the Chargers gave up 63 points to a Las Vegas Raiders squad that had only been shut out four days earlier.

In addition to setting a franchise record, the 63 points surrendered was also the most the Chargers had ever given up. Los Angeles is ranked 29th in yards allowed per game (375.3) and 27th in opponents’ points scored per game (24.6). Arguably, Belichick is the finest defensive strategist of his generation. With a talented offensive coordinator at their disposal, the Chargers might quickly rise to the rank of a contender in the crowded AFC.

Odds for Chargers’ Next Head Coach

  • Bill Belichick (3/1)
  • Frank Smith (4/1)
  • Kellen Moore (4/1)
  • Ben Johnson (7/1)
  • Bobby Slowik (8/1)
  • Brian Flores (9/1)
  • Jim Harbaugh (9/1)
  • Eric Bieniemy (10/1)
  • Dan Quinn (14/1)
  • Jerod Mayo (14/1)
  • Lincoln Riley (14/1)
  • Brian Johnson (16/1)
  • Raheem Morris (20/1)
  • Deion Sanders (40/1)

Belichick is the leading candidate to succeed Staley

For the job of replacing Staley, Belichick is the running favourite with an odd of 3/1. That is somewhat better than the 4/1 chances of Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith and current Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Next at 7/1 is Ben Johnson, who manages Detroit’s offence and has been considered a promising coaching prospect for the last two years.

On Friday, Chargers general manager Tom Telesco was also fired, along with Staley. Shortly after the team’s crushing 63-21 loss to the Raiders, the decision was made. Telesco, 51, spent 15 years with the Indianapolis Colts organization before being named general manager of the Chargers in 2013.
