2024 London Marathon schedule, date, venue, track, athletes, & favorites to win
At the 2024 London Marathon, three of the fastest women in history aim to beat the women’s-only world record of 2:17:01 set at the 2017 London Marathon. Tigst Assefa, the current world record holder, and Brigid Kosgei, the Olympic silver medallist, are among the top contenders. Meanwhile, the men’s field is also highly competitive, led by Kenenisa Bekele, the third-fastest marathoner ever, and former New York Marathon champion Tamirat Tola.
In this edition, elite runners aim to beat Mary Keitany’s women’s-only world record time. Assefa, who set a world record for a mixed-gender event in Berlin last September with a time of 2:11:53, not only aims to win her second consecutive Marathon Major but also to break the course record. Meanwhile, Rio 2016 Olympian Callum Hawkins and Emile Cairess are leading the British men in this year’s race.
Kelvin Kiptum, a 23-year-old from Kenya, won the 2023 London Marathon with a record time of 2:01:25, making it the second-fastest marathon ever. He later broke his own record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:00:35. Tragically, Kiptum passed away in a car accident in February 2024 at the age of 24. The women’s winner of the 2023 London Marathon was Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands, finishing the race in 2:18:33.
