The 11 spectacular goals scored last year that will compete for the 2022 Puskas Prize have been revealed together with the nominees for The Best FIFA Football Awards, the award with the most clunkiest named of all the major individual awards.
The FIFA World Cup finals, the UEFA Women’s Champions League, games in the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup, and matches in the Polish Amputee Soccer League are all represented on the impressively diverse shortlist, which also includes a collection of outstanding goals scored worldwide in both the men’s and women’s game.
List of FIFA Puskas best goal award winners of all time by year
The Puskas Award, which is now a part of The Best FIFA awards ceremony, is given each year to the player who scores the most beautiful goal in a game, wherever in the world, as long as it is documented on camera. Before FIFA’s panel of experts selects a clear winner, the list is narrowed down by an initial public vote to the top three candidates.
The award was established in honour of Ferenc Puskas, a former great for Madrid and Hungary who amassed an amazing 512 goals in 528 games and a then-record 84 goals in 85 international matches.
Who won the inaugural edition of the FIFA Puskas award?
Cristiano Ronaldo won the first Puskas Award, but since then, he has only been nominated once. In 2018, he came in second to Mohamed Salah. Lionel Messi, meanwhile, has received a total of seven nominations since the Puskas Trophy was introduced in 2009, but he has never been able to place higher than the second position he earned in 2019, his most recent appearance on a Puskas shortlist.
