Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, has amassed 5000 runs in the ODI format more quickly than any other player. In 97 innings, he reached the 5000 run threshold. Hashim Amla’s previous record of 5000 runs in 101 innings was surpassed by Babar.
Viv Richards, a former West Indian hero who had amassed 5000 runs in 114 innings, moved up to third place after Babar managed to surpass Amla’s mark. Former India captain, Virat Kohli, reached the 5000-run mark in 114 innings where as Australia’s prominent left-handed batter, David Warner, did so in 115 innings.
Babar hit a beautiful 107(117) against New Zealand in the fourth ODI of the series on Friday at the National Stadium in Karachi to record his 18th century. His performance may be key as Pakistan strives to claim the top spot in the ODI team standings.
The legendary Pakistani batsman missed Amla’s world record for the quickest 4000 ODI runs by a sliver last year since it took him one more innings to match the feat, which was accomplished by the former Proteas opener in his 82nd innings.
The rise of Pakistan in ODIs
Prior to the start of the five-match ODI series, Pakistan had a rating of 106 and was ranked fifth; however, after four consecutive wins at home, they take the top spot with a rating of 113.483 after they won the fourth ODI on Friday, with Australia falling to No. 2 and India moving up to No. 3.
Pakistan defeated New Zealand in the one-day international by 102 runs, scoring 334 runs in total thanks in large part to the captain Babar’s superb century (102). Leg-spinner Usama Mir claimed a four-for as New Zealand was bowled out for 232 while attempting to reach the goal.
Pakistan thrashed the Blackcaps in the first two games in Rawalpindi by margins of five and seven wickets, respectively, and then in the third ODI in Karachi by a margin of 26 runs.
The series is currently 4-0 in favour of Pakistan, thus they will try to sweep the visitors in the fifth and final ODI.
