Only Cristiano Ronaldo has ever won the award by such a wide margin, and it was rather unexpected that he received no votes this time.
How is voting conducted, and who is eligible to vote for the Ballon d’Or award?
If you pay close attention to football, you’re probably aware that votes determine who wins the Ballon d’Or. France Football changed the Ballon d’Or regulations in 2022. They changed the timing so that awards were given for a football season rather than for accomplishments over the course of a calendar year. Additionally, it was agreed that only the top 100 FIFA World Ranking nations would be permitted to cast votes. From a list of the 30 players that have been narrowed down, each journalist can choose five.
The Ballon d’Or scoring system explained
First: Six points
Second: Four points
Third: Three points
Fourth: Two points
Fifth: One point

Here’s the list of each journalist who voted in the 2022 Ballon d’Or
Karima Benzema was a clear frontrunner for this year’s Ballon d’Or award, and most journalists picked him to win, with the exception of three nations, Senegal, Egypt, and Slovenia, which chose Salah, Sadio Mane, and Robert Lewandowski as their first choices.
What Benzema said after winning the Ballon d’Or?
“All the work I put in and the fact that I never gave up makes me incredibly proud,” “When I wasn’t a member of the French squad, it was challenging, but I worked hard, never gave up, kept my head down, and loved playing football. I’m quite proud of the route my family and I took to get here, which wasn’t an easy task at all. For me, age is simply a number.”
