But this whole song is more than the star’s return to the limelight as it’s a really heart-touching tribute to the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman who unfortunately passed away in 2020 after suffering from the disease of cancer.
Rihanna’s Lift Me Up Tribute
Rihanna wrote the track with Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems and it is composed by Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson. In a statement Tems has stated “After discussing with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that will portray a calm embrace from all the members that i lost in my life till now.”
“I tried to imagine, how it will feel like if I could sing to them now and also express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been a true and an amazing inspiration to me so hearing her conveys this song is a great honor.”
Meaning
In the Lift Me Up song RiRi sings about a very warm and deep profound loss when she sings the lines “drowning in an endless sea” and “burning in a hopeless dream”.
Then Riri started singing “Hold me when you go to sleep / Keep me in the warmth of your love” Riri is likely to be referencing the loss of Chadwick Boseman using the metaphor of the sleep to reflect his demise and loss she bears.
The tear-jerking lines were “When you depart, keep me safe and Safe and the sound” in the song lights on the procedure of life and death and someone who is looking over their bereaved loved ones. In the second verse the line says “Take some time and stay with me and Keep me in the strength of your arms” she is asking and wishing for a person not to leave which is really close to her.
The whole song is truly and deeply a loving reminder to Chadwick Boseman. He was loved and is still missed after his unfortunate demise.
