And even after securing jobs, many lifeguards died every year due to harsh conditions with fewer facilities. Similar to this, tributes are pouring in for Derek Traeger, a lifeguard who tragically passed away on Sunday, August 14, according to NBC.
In a statement announcing his passing, the Lifeguard Division of the Los Angeles County Fire Department wrote:
It is with great heartache the LA Co Lifeguards share active duty death of Ocean Lifeguard Derek Traeger.

Who Was Derek Traeger?
Derek Traeger was a young lifeguard from Los Angeles County. He was recently been in the news because he died recently and lots of people their heartfelt tributes for him on various social media platforms.
He was born and brought up in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of San Pedro, where he learned to swim and surf.
He did his schooling at San Pedro High School. He was also a student of California State University, Long Beach.
He was only 28 years old when he passed away.
His Career
Derek Traeger, the captain of the San Pedro High surf squad and a swim teacher since 2011, has always had a fascination with the water. Before becoming a Los Angeles City Life Guard, he served for two years as a cadet and for nine years as a junior lifeguard for LA County.
During his six years of service to the County of Los Angeles, he made sure that everyone was safe at some of the state’s busiest beaches. He was put in charge of Santa Monica North’s Beaches.
Death Cause Of Derek Traeger
Traeger’s cause of death was still unknown, although documents from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner showed that he passed away on a freeway.
