Lee, in October of the year 2018, overthrew World No. Chou Tien-chen at the Chinese Taipei Open and advanced to the final of the tournament where he thwarted Riichi Takeshita and earned the BWF World Tour trophy as his first BWF title and his second international.
The tournament win made Lee become the second player from the country to do so after Lee Chong Wei since the year 2013. Zii Jia ended that year with the Korea Masters advancement to the final of the tournament where he was dominated by former World No. 1 Son Wan-ho of South Korea.

A Malaysian badminton player who is currently ranked 7th in Men’s singles which is his highest ranking, Lee Zii Jia, was born on 29th March 1998 in Al or Set at, Kedah (Malaysia).
The player was introduced to the badminton world at the age of just six years old by his parents Lee Chee Hin and Leow Siet Peng, who are teachers and former basketball players. Following his great outcome in the under 12 competition, he was effortlessly drafted to the Bukit Jalil Sports School.

Lee was crowned as the junior champion at the Perak and Selangor Badminton Open in the year 2015 because of this, he got recognised by the Badminton Association of Malaysia. One year later in 2016, he managed to earn a bronze medal in the World Junior Championships as the Malaysian was lost in the semifinals fixture against Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia. Later in the same month, Lee took part in the India International Series and supervised until he faced world number 17 Lakshya Sen of India in the final match.
Lee was crowned with his first senior title at the Polish International where he defeated his country’s Soong Joo Ven at the final face-off. Two months later in November of the same year, the veteran player attained the Bitburger Open’s semifinal stage and that’s how the year ended for the player.

The starting of the season 2019 didn’t go well for the Malaysian as he couldn’t progress to the semis of the Thailand Masters. The player lost to the Frenchman Brice Leverdez in straight sets at the quarter-finals. The journey of Lee ended at the quarter’s stage at the Malaysian Masters, Indonesia Masters and German Open as well. The year didn’t go well for him as he revealed he struggled went through some complications that resulted in weakening his performance.
Lee advanced to his first major semi-finals of the year at the Thailand Open in August after getting knocked early in multiple tournaments. He was also qualified for the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland but was defeated by World No. 1 Japanese Kento Momota in the quarter-finals.
Following Lee’s disappointment in several events, the player was forced to withdraw in the second round stage of the China Open. He also later concluded to retire from other tournaments as he suffered food promising. Despite the disappointing year, the player managed to achieve a goal on November 12th and reached the ranking 11 in the world at the BWF World rankings. He ended his year by bagging a good medal at the Southeast Asian Games in the men’s singles tournament as well as contributing to the country’s team to earn a silver medal.
The season of 2020 started with a Southeast Asian tour for the gold medalist where he took part in the Malaysia Masters, Indonesia Masters and Thailand Masters which were better than the previous year as he advanced to the semifinals in Malaysia.
Following the government’s restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak, several tournaments were forced to be suspended one of which was the German Open. Lee finally managed to debut at the All England Open after he failed to do so because of his low rankings, he conquered against Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and then to Lu Guangzu of China. He also defeated the Olympic champion Chen Long of China in the semis fixture.
The winning streak and his performances at the tournament resulted positive for Lee as his world ranking was lifted on March 17 to no. 10 and that’s how the year ended for the Malaysian.
Lee started his 2021 season by achieving another stair at the All England Open as he bagged his first Super 1000 tournament by overthrowing the defending champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. His journey at the singles of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics was ended early at the round of 16.
