Arif belongs from Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir and, was born on 3 March 1990 in a high-class family of Kashmir.
Mohammad Arif’s father, Yasin Khan owns a ski equipment shop in Gulmarg and thus, Arif has always been close to the sport. Another reason for Arif to choose this sport was that due to heavy snow all the time there was no playground for them to play cricket or football, so skiing was the most convenient sport for them. He first took skiing as a sport at the age of four.
During an interview, Arif told to the reporter, “It was in 1994, we had to walk about 500 metres to the ski shop. And there was thick snow. My father had groomed a small ski slope just outside the shop. We started (skiing) at around 9.30 AM and went on for hours.”
Arif Khan decided to take up this sport as competitive skiing when he was 10 years old and, never looked back, only steadily rose up the ladder. At the tender age of just 12, Mohammad Arif secured a gold medal in the slalom in his first appearance only at the national championship.
Arif Khan Wins, Achievements, Awards
When he was 16 years of age, Arif made his international debut for India at a junior international ski federation (FIS) event in Yomase, Japan and, finished 23rd in the giant slalom.
Arif Khan clinched two gold medals – in the slalom and giant slalom – at the South Asian Winter Games in 2011, the only edition held so far.
Mohammad Arif Khan got the first taste of the FIS World Ski Championships in 2013 when the Indian alpine skier from Kashmir finished 59th in the slalom and 91st in the giant slalom and, but unfortunately couldn’t move past the qualification stage.
Since then there is no look back for Arif as he took part in three more world championships, with his best result being 45th in the giant slalom at the 2021 edition in Italy. It was the first time when he qualified for the final in any world championship event.
Though skiing is an expensive sport, Arif’s father has his full support for his son as most of Arif’s funding is done by his father only, who gave all his income that comes from their ski equipment.
To support his career as well his family, Arif also works as a skiing instructor or a coach occasionally to make up for the shortfall.
However, before the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, Mohammad Arif Khan had to do crowdfunding in order to train and for other expenses in the lead up to the Games, but sadly, he fell short by a small margin and his dream was left unrealized.
