Born on 4th March 1972, Jos Verstappen hails from Montfort, Netherlands. The Dutchman was the German Formula Three champion and also won the Masters of Formula Three in 1993. In the year 1994, he raced for Benetton in Formula One, securing two podium finishes. Unfortunately in the same year, his car was left inundated as a results of flames during a pit stop due to a fuelling rig malfunction. Verstappen escaped with some trivial burns and left departed from Benetton in 1994.
Till 2003, the Dutchman raced in F1 for several teams- Simtek in 1995, Footwork Arrows in 1996, Tyrrell in 1997, Stewart in 1998, Honda in 1999, then again back to Arrows from 2000 to 2001. After that, he made a comeback to the cockpit 2 years later in 2003 with Paul Stoddart’s European Minardi team who were considered as the tail enders of the grid.
With a total of 17 championship points to his name, Jos Verstappen accomplished two podium places and participated in as many as 107 Grand Prixs. These achievements helped him attain the title of the second best performing Dutch driver in Formula One till date, a record which was recently broken by his very own son, Max Verstappen.
Early Racing Career
Having begun karting at the age of 8, Jos indulged in national competitions soon after. He became Dutch junior champion in 1984, kept getting better and even won two European titles. It was by the time the year 1991 almost came to an end when Verstappen shifted to car racing.
He was a driver in Formula Opel Lotus which was a class in which identical cars competed against each other. Having won the European championship in his debut year, Jos got an exciting opportunity to drive in Formula Three with Van Amersfoort Racing.
