Michael Masi has found himself at the receiving end of several calls from fans to get him sacked after Verstappen overtook Hamilton in the final lap of their race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021.

Born in Sydney in 1979, Michael Masi is actually of Italian descent. He grew up in the suburbs of Fairfield and Canada Bay. Masi was initially studying marketing at TAFE in Australia, but later went on to pursue a career in motorsports.

Masi is not married yet as there is no information whatsoever about his wife or of him having children. While still getting his education in school, the Australian started off his career in motor racing by volunteering for Super Touring teams. He was employed as the deputy race director in the Supercars touring car series as well as at Rally Australia.

Three years ago in 2018, Masi was appointed by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile as the deputy race director of Formula Two and Formula Three. He then served as deputy to F1 race director Charlie Whiting and after the latter’s sudden tragic death, Masi was assigned the role of Formula One race director.

What is required of Masi in this role? Well, the Aussie’s job is to oversee the logistics of a grand prix weekend, making sure all cars, drivers and tracks conform to the FIA rules and regulations before, during and post the race. Since 2019, Masi has been the FIA Formula One race director, safety delegate, permanent starter and head of the F1 Technical Department.

It was during the course of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that Masi got involved in what we know so far might have been a safety car procedure controversy. Lewis Hamilton was leading on lap 56 of the final race when it was decided that lapped cars would not be allowed to retake their lap. However in a strange turn of events, on lap 57, Masi suddenly changed his mind. He only allowed the five cars that were directly in front of the championship front-runner Max Verstappen to unlap themselves before the restart.

This provided Verstappen with an edge over his British rival Lewis Hamilton whose Mercedes was suffering from downgraded hard tyres. On the other hand, the Dutch driver who had pitted into soft tyres managed to overtake Hamilton, eventually winning the 2021 World Driver’s Championship. Many fans believe that this was a cheap stunt and a breach of Article 48 by Masi which is why they want him to be sacked.
