On several occasions, the Canaries were on the verge of taking the lead. Onel Hernández, who was substituted in, nearly scored after Teemu Pukki hit the post in the opening period. Grant Hanley volleyed goalward with City believing they had won the match. However, the ball hit the post and missed the goal, ending City’s hopes of winning the match.
The starting lineup included Todd Cantwell and Gabriel Sara. Sam Byram, who was making his 50th start for the team, also kicked things off.
First Half: Norwich dominated
The Yellows got the first genuine chance of the game. Cantwell worked effectively with Sam McCallum, who used his cut-back to discover Gabriel Sara. Seny Dieng made a savvy save in response to Sara’s strong drive. The visitors made their first attempt on goal down the other end through Ilias Chair. The attempt was commendable, but Angus Gunn responded with a firm palm.
Pukki was the next to take a shot as the Canaries continued to pose a danger in the first 15 minutes of play. Byram’s forward ball was picked up by Aaron Ramsey, who then connected with the Finn, but Dieng stopped his attempt to raise the ball over the crossbar. Pukki then came inches away from scoring the opening goal. The striker rolled the ball past one defender after Byram’s excellent assist, but another defender stopped his initial shot. His second attempt appeared to be heading for the far corner, but it came out off the post instead.
After the game had been quiet, Cantwell pounced on a stray pass and supplied Pukki, who just missed getting his shot past a line of defenders. Tim Iroegbunam’s drive forced Gunn late in the first half to make a good save low at his near post.
Second half depiction
Eight minutes into the second half, Cantwell nearly gave City the lead with a speculative effort, but Dieng had to tip the ball over the bar.
QPR would have two chances to get on the board first. In the first, Lyndon Dykes’ header was stopped by Gunn after Chris Willock struck the post.
After his introduction, Marcelino Nez appeared to be a threat. Before his vicious effort forced a defender to block for a corner, his corner first wrecked havoc in the QPR area. Hernández had a chance to give the Canaries a late victory after outpacing the final defender, but Dieng blocked his attempt.
Hanley’s shot off the outside of the post almost led to late heroics from City and Hanley, but the points were ultimately shared.
