Messi’s contract for Barcelona was recently expired, making him a free agent now. In the meantime, his contract revealed that he earned a whopping $674 million over the last 4 years, playing for the La Liga club Barcelona, in Spain.
This summoned many NBA stars to react in disbelief, including Kevin Durant, who are usually the athletes paid the highest. Read on to know how they reacted.
NBA Stars React To Lionel Messi Huge Contract Worth At Barcelona
The football GOAT Lionel Messi had signed the massive contract back in 2017. Over time, Barcelona won 2 Spanish League Championships, 2 Copa del Reys, 1 Spanish Super Cup among many more. It was worth $674 million, accounting for $188 million per year. This colossal contract is comfortably the biggest one in sports history. It was enough to leave some of the big stars of NBA in disbelief.
Kevin Durant, who is one of Forbes’ top three highest-paid athletes of 2021, used one subtle word to describe the contract – ‘Insane.’ Meanwhile, Bradley Beal used the exploding face emoji to cite his disbelief. Isaiah Thomas and Alex Bazzell were also clearly baffled with the huge number on a footballer’s contract and tweeted how their kids are going to play football over basketball. Larry Nance Jr. tweeted how it wasn’t just any footballer but the one and only Leo Messi.

Messi is currently a free agent any club can rope him in if they offer him the wages he wants. Barcelona is in talks of a new contract and has kept this as their top priority. Writer Guillem Balague said that Messi’s contract renewal is new president Joan Laporta’s main priority. “We want him to stay, Leo wants to stay and we are looking for the best formula,” Laporta said. The latter is negotiating it directly with Messi’s father and representative, Jorge Messi.
