DeBoer led the Huskies to a 14-1 record in 2023 and a College Football Playoff berth, beating No. 3 Texas 37-31 in the CFP quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. In the national championship game, the Huskies lost 34–13 to Michigan.

After winning 11-2 in 2022, Kalen DeBoer signed a contract extension with Washington that increased his compensation to $4.2 million with annual raises to $4.8 million in the last year of the deal (2028). In addition, performance-based bonuses and yearly raises of $100,000 were included. It also included a $12 million buyout increase if DeBoer left to take a new position.
