The 26-year-old was widely considered one of the favorites to win a medal at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Vijay Kumar Yadav’s Medal Winning Success
Vijay Kumar is not a new face when it comes to Judo in India. He is already a well-established Judoka with several illustrious championships throughout the short span of his career. He has proven his potential by winning multiple championships at both the senior and junior levels.
Vijay won a bronze medal at the Asian Open in Hong Kong in 2018, and won the Commonwealth Championships in Walsall in 2019 and Jaipur in 2018. In 2019, he won a Lakshman state award and also a bronze medal at the Asian Open in Hong Kong.
Vijay Kumar’s Rankings
Vijay won medals at the Asian Cadet Championships as a cadet and ranked fifth in 2017 as a senior. The Indian Judoka competes in the IJF World Tour. His best year came in 2018, when he experienced a substantial jump in his rankings from 60 in the world in December 2017, to world number 22 by 2018.
Nonetheless, after a fifth-place finish in the Asian Championship that year, Vijay’s participation at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta was met with a lot of expectations. However, it was a disappointing performance as he lost in the first round, dealing a hard blow to his career. The government removed Vijay from the elite Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and withdrew his entry to the world championships.
The following year, Vijay, who was the defending national champion, faced another setback. The Army’s Gulab Ali outplayed him in the 60kg title, which was the first time in five years. By April of last year, his world ranking had slipped to 150.
