Sheela Bhatt, a well-known veteran journalist, recently made an intriguing disclosure concerning her first meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bhatt revealed that she got the chance to meet Modi back in 1981 while he was doing his MA Part II Master’s degree. While recalling those times, she praised Modi’s commitment to his studies and mentioned that Prof. Pravin Sheth, who served as his professor, also served as her tutor.

Recalling a particular classmate of Modi’s who is now a lawyer, Sheela Bhatt mentioned reaching out to her amidst the ongoing controversy sparked by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Congress party, who have been questioning the Prime Minister’s educational qualifications on social media. She also urged her to speak up in defense of PM Modi, but she chose to remain silent on the matter.

For the uninitiated, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has consistently questioned Modi’s degree and demanded information about his educational history. It raised doubts in people’s minds and sparked speculation about the authenticity of the Prime Minister’s degrees. The Congress party, echoing Kejriwal’s stance, also criticized the Prime Minister over the matter.

Who is Sheela Bhatt?

Sheela Bhatt is a veteran Indian journalist. She has been in the news because she recently revealed that she met PM Modi when he was pursuing his postgraduation from Gujarat University.

In 1962, she was born in Mumbai, India. She finished her journalism studies at the University of Mumbai and started working as a correspondent for the Indian Express. Beginning in the early 1990s, she began focusing her work on terrorism and organized crime.

Her husband Kanti Bhatt married Ranjan in the 1960s and divorced her in 1977. He married Sheela Bhatt in 1979. Sheela was all of 18 when she first met Kanti in 1977 after she contacted him by dialling a number printed in Abhishek magazine.

Sheela Bhatt has dedicated a bench at Sunder Nursery in memory of her husband and daughter and the benches will be maintained by the Management Trust.

Sheela attended the University of Mumbai to study journalism.

Thanks to her investigation, Sheela Bhatt was able to track down Dawood Ibrahim, a well-known gangster who is considered to be the head of the D-Company criminal organization. However, due to this, she also becomes the target of the criminal underworld. She was wounded in a botched assassination attempt in 1993. She has also experienced abuse and repeated threats.

Notwithstanding the dangers, Bhatt has continued to write on terrorism and organized crime. Her daring and insight into the criminal underworld earned her several awards, including the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism.
