How Real Madrid managed to sign Joselu?
Joselu and Madrid took advantage of a stipulation in the player’s contract that stated that once the Catalan club’s relegation to the second tier was guaranteed, a loan agreement was necessary in order to keep the player’s wage.
To find a mutually agreeable resolution, the capital club decided to negotiate, and the outcome of those discussions is a loan for which Madrid will pay €500,000, with a non-obligatory buy option of €1.5 Million in 2024. Additionally, it has been agreed that when the initial term expires, the demoted team would have a preferential option for two Castilla players.
How has Joselu performed throughout his professional career?
Despite playing for demoted Espanyol previous season, Joselu had a successful year personally, netting 17 goals in LaLiga Santander. Notably, Joselu spent three years of his career at Real Madrid during 2009 through 2012. Although he only participated in two games for Jose Mourinho’s first team and played mostly for Real Madrid Castilla during the aforementioned period, he will hope to become a regular in 2023–24. Joselu shared a dressing room at Valdebebas with Nacho, Carvajal, and Morata, among others.
The striker, who previously played for Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hannover, Stoke City, Deportivo de La Coruna, Newcastle, Alaves, and Espanyol, is now a member of the Spanish national squad and brings expertise with him. He has made 470 professional appearances, scoring 148 goals overall and contributing 39 assists. At the UEFA Nations League semi-final, Joselu scored the game-winning goal against Italy as Spain qualified for the championship match before lifting the trophy on Sunday.
