Prediction
Tuesday’s opening round of the 2022 US Open will feature John Isner versus Federico Delbonis.
Isner’s season has been unreliable so far. His best performance came in Houston, where he lost to fellow countryman Reilly Opelka in the championship match. The big-serving American has won 19 of 35 matches.
Additionally, he just had a successful tournament at the Cincinnati Masters, where he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in three hard-fought sets.
Isner stunned Andy Murray at Wimbledon last month with one of his best recent performances, but he lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner in the third round. Here, however, he appears to be headed for a more straightforward opening match against world no. 134 Federico Delbonis. The Argentine comes at Flushing Meadows with a dismal 10/21 record, but he twice overcame deficits in sets to barely advance last week.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, Delbonis advanced through the qualifying rounds of the US Open, defeating Zsombor Piros, Ethan Quinn, and Jesper De Jong with commanding victories.
The Argentinean has not been playing well lately, and as a result, he dropped out of the top 100 in the ATP Rankings. In front of his home crowd in Buenos Aires, where he advanced to the semifinals before falling to Casper Ruud in straight sets, he achieved his greatest performance of the year.
The 37-year-old and No. 48 Isner plays a lessened schedule but is a competitive player on tour and a well-liked figure in New York. Isner has won 14 of his 16 ATP titles on US soil, most recently at the Atlanta Open last year, but his best performance came during a run to the Wimbledon semifinals, where he lost to Kevin Anderson in a five-set marathon match by a score of 24-26 in the deciding set, forcing a tiebreak for the title.
This season, Delbonis has had some difficulties. Despite defeating the American the previous time they faced off, that victory was achieved on his preferred surface namely clay. He might have a difficult time defending against Isner’s huge serve on the fast New York hardcourts.
