In his second try, Aldrin cleared 8.37m, but the tailwind speed registered on the wind gauge was + 4.1m/s, which was significantly above the permissible limit of + 2m/s. He will not be denied a gold, but he will very certainly be denied the national record.

Aldrin, on the other hand, qualified for the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July after a legal leap of 8.26 metres in his fourth try. The qualifying standard for the World Championships is 8.22m.

On a day with nine jumps over 8 metres, Jeswin had a strong series, with all five of his valid attempts exceeding that distance, while Sreeshankar sailed over that distance on each of his three valid tries, including an 8.36m that helped him improve his own national record by 10cm and earn a spot among the top ten Asians in long jump history.

With his 8.20 metres win in the Indian Grand Prix 2 in Thiruvananthapuram less than a month ago, the 20-year-old joined a tiny group of Indians in the 8 metres club.

Why Isn’t Jeswin Aldrin’s Gold Medal Jump A World Record?

Aldrin, who broke the 8.37 metres barrier on his second try, was unable to break the record because the wind speed during his leap was +4.1 metres per second, much over the permissible limit of +2 metres per second.

On Sunday, Aldrin tried five leaps, all of which he cleared the 8-meter threshold. However, it was on his second attempt that he broke Sreeshankar’s national record of 8.26m.

Sreeshankar, meanwhile, smashed his own national record with a jump of 8.37m on his second try after opening the competition with an 8.16 metres jump. Sreeshankar’s 8.37 metres leap was recorded in the books, as the wind speed at the time of the attempt was +1.5 metres.
