Prediction
Victoria Azarenka and World No. 5 Jessica Pegula will square off in the 2022 Guadalajara Open last four on Saturday.
Pegula advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Bianca Andreescu and Elena Rybakina. There, she played 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens. The 28-year-old broke her opponent’s serve twice to win the first set 5-1 and get off to a great start. She got a set point on her opponent’s serve in the seventh game but failed to capitalise. She served out the set with ease in the following game. The second set began with three consecutive serve breaks, with the World No. 5 claiming the first to lead 3-1. Pegula won the following three games in a row after Stephens held serve to win the match 6-2, 6-2.
On the other hand, Azarenka won matches over Paula Badosa, Elina Avanesyan, and Madison Keys to advance to the quarterfinals and faced Coco Gauff. In the opening set, which included eight service breaks, both players struggled to keep their serves in tact. The former World No. 1 won the tie-break to take the set after they were successful in forcing one. Gauff improved in the second set, and she easily won with just one break of service at the start of the match. The last set was challenging. In the sixth game of the set, Azarenka secured a break to take the lead 4-2. She subsequently held her serve to extend her lead to 5-2. Because of time constraints, the teenager was unable to reenter the tournament. Azarenka polished off the match fast to win 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3 and move on to her first semifinal of the season.
In the quarterfinals, Pegula easily defeated Stephens while Azarenka struggled to upset Gauff. When she competes against the American, one of the most dependable and effective players, the former World No. 1 will have her toughest test to date. She glides well on the court, has a strong forehand, and smashes the ball with tremendous depth. Azarenka must start at the top of her game if she hopes to beat the World No. 5 in the match.
