After losing on Thanksgiving Day, the Washington Commanders made a swift decision to fire defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer.
The decision was made in response to the defense’s ongoing troubles, as the club has often given up over 30 points and allowed significant yards in the bulk of its games this season. The Commanders’ defense is currently ranked 29th out of all NFL clubs.

Coach Ron Rivera made the coaching announcements and wished Del Rio and Vieselmeyer well while expressing his thanks for their work. With eight defeats in 10 games since their encouraging start, the Commanders’ dismal loss severely hurt their record in their first season under new management, which is now 4-8.

Who is Jack Del Rio?
Jack Del Rio is a renowned American football coach and former professional linebacker. He has been in the news because he was fired from his position as defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.
He was born on 4 April 1963 in Castro Valley, California, U.S. His mother is Italian-American, while his father, prominent musician Jack Del Rio Sr., is of Spanish ancestry.
Jack Del Rio did his schooling at Hayward High School in Hayward, California, where he excelled in football, baseball, and basketball and was recognized as an outstanding three-sport athlete. Later, in 1990, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Kansas.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Linda. Together, they have a son named Luke, who currently coaches offensive quality control for the Washington Commanders after playing collegiate football for the Florida Gators in the middle of the 2010s.

His career
Jack Del Rio began his football career as a linebacker at the University of Southern California. In the third round of the 1985 draft, the New Orleans Saints selected him to play in the National Football League. Before retiring in 1996, he made contributions to many NFL clubs during his playing career.
Transitioning to coaching, Del Rio embarked on his coaching career as an assistant with the Saints in 1997. His skills brought him to the Baltimore Ravens, where he coached linebackers and helped them win Super Bowl XXXV against the New York Giants. After a brief stint as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, Del Rio became the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003.
Jack Del Rio went on to become the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos for three seasons after that. He subsequently took on the role of head coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2015, leading the team to a 25–23 record before leaving at the end of the 2017 campaign.
Following a stint as an NFL analyst for ESPN, he took on the role of defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2020, a position from which he was relieved of duties midway through the 2023 season.
He was a head coach in the NFL for 12 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-11) and the then-Oakland Raiders (2015-17), compiling a record of 93-94 with three playoff appearances. From 2015-17, Del Rio was the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders. In 2016, he guided the Raiders to a 12-4 record, marking the franchise’s first 12-win season.
