Iker Casillas, a former Real Madrid player and FIFA World Cup champion with Spain, shocked the internet on Sunday by coming out as gay on his official Twitter account. On the microblogging website, Casillas tweeted, “I hope you respect me: I’m gay. The tweet was later removed, though. Then Casillas apologised to the LGBT community for the remark and admitted that his Twitter account had been hacked.

Hacker posted gay-related tweets on Casillas’ account.
The 41-year-old received a lot of support from his followers after posting the remark on Twitter, notably from Carlos Puyol, a former teammate and legendary Barcelona player, who wrote back to him, “It’s time to speak our experiences, Iker.” But a little while afterwards he removed the post.
Casillas tweeted in response to all the rumours about him maybe dating his former sister-in-law Alejandra Onieva, according to a Spanish media AS. He was also questioned on his relationship with Shakira, the ex-wife of Gerard Pique, last month.

Prior to their separation announcement in 2021, Sara Carbonero, a sports journalist, and Casillas were married. Their two children, who were born in 2014 and 2015, respectively, are their only ones.
An analysis of Casillas’ legendary football career
After spending eight years with Real Madrid’s junior team, Casillas made his senior team debut in 1999. In 510 games, Casillas played for the Spanish giants, and he also helped them to multiple championships. The 41-year-old won all significant club championships with Madrid, including three UEFA Champions Leagues, four Supercopas, two Copa del Reys, and five La Ligas.
Additionally, while wearing Madrid’s uniform, he won two UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
In addition, Casillas represented Spain from 2000 to 2016. He participated in 167 games for Spain in various multi-nation competitions. Both the UEFA Euro 2000 and the FIFA World Cup 2010, which Spain won, were won by Casillas, who set a joint-record by keeping five clean sheets. Following a heart attack, Casillas declared his retirement from the sport in August 2020.
