60-year-old S Somanath was born in July 1963 in Alappuzha, Kerala. His journey into the world of space began with a passion for science. Despite being a Hindi teacher, his father recognized and nurtured his son’s curiosity by providing him with science books in both English and Malayalam languages.

Somanath’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue Mechanical Engineering at Kerala University. This was followed by a Post Graduation in Aerospace Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Somanath’s personal life reflects his commitment to excellence. He is married to Valsala who works with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department under the Ministry of Finance. The couple is blessed with two children. Both of them have completed their Post Graduation in Engineering.

S Somanath career

Somanath’s journey within ISRO began in 1985 and he has since been a driving force behind several crucial projects. His diverse roles within the organization include Project Manager of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Deputy Director for Structures Entity/Propulsion & Space Ordnance Entity, and Project Director of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV Mk-III).

S Somanath was instrumental in the early phases of the PSLV project and served as the Deputy Director of Propulsion.

Somanath’s leadership skills came to the forefront when he assumed the role of Director at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in June 2015. LPSC which is responsible for designing and realizing liquid propulsion systems was benefitted from his visionary approach. Additionally, he served as the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), the lead center of ISRO for launch vehicle design and realization.

His appointment as the ISRO Chairman marked a significant milestone in India’s space exploration journey. With a clear focus on technology, policy, implementation, and stakeholder management, he aims to expand the boundaries of space exploration into industries.
