The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) banned Monk Amogh Lila Das for his latest comment. He was seen commenting on the youth icon, the great thinker and philosopher Swami Vivekananda, and his revered guru, Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

Taking fast action against the monk for making the statement about India’s most respected holy leaders, ISKCON said, ”We are very much pained by his absolutely improper and unacceptable words and his lack of understanding of the magnificent teachings of these two personalities.” 

Amogh Lila Das is 43 years old and was born in 1980 in Lucknow and many of his devotees also know him as HG Amogh Lila Prabhu or Prabhu Ji.

Amogh Lila Das, born Ashish Arora in Lucknow, is a well-known spiritual activist, lifestyle coach, and motivational speaker, who has been associated with ISKCON for 12 years.

Amogh completed B.Tech. in Software Engineering from Delhi University. While studying in 7th standard, Amogh Lila Das read 7 verses of the Bhagavad Gita and read that the mind is fickle and doesn’t listen to everybody.

He did his schooling from Mizoram, Gangtok, Aizawl, and Darjeeling due to his father’s dynamic job posting at RAW.

What’s The Controversy Surrounding Amogh Lila Das? 

Amogh Lila Das, the monk in question, courted controversy by criticising Swami Vivekananda for eating fish and arguing that a monk can never kill a living being. He also made remarks on Swami Vivekananda’s master Ramakrishna’s teaching of “Jato Mat Tato Path” (as many opinions, as many paths), claiming that ‘’not every path leads to the same destination.’’

Some netizens were quick to spread his speech and make the issue viral.

In his speech, he addressed the qualities of a monk who would never kill an animal to fill his or her stomach. He even raised the importance of Tulsi and Geeta. Which is an adherent follower of.

In Indian culture, there are multiple types of followers, believers, and monks. Every group of followers is different from one another, and their teaching and following might differ. Swami Vivekanand followed his religious path and was a boon to Indian culture and history. His motive to spread Hinduism across borders can never be matched. So is that what Monk Amogh Lila Das ji is exactly trying to do. However, his direct comment on Swami Ji faced a backlash. His statement was called a publicity stunt as his beliefs are different from other monks.

One-Month Ban On The Monk

Taking appropriate measures, ISKCON issued a statement declaring that Das’s opinions are not typical of its beliefs and teachings. He is a revered monk known for his simple life and great teachings.

ISKON, however, stood against him and said that his “derogatory remarks” show a lack of awareness about the plurality of spiritual traditions and personal choices.

The statement read, “Taking note of his significant mistake, ISKCON has decided to prohibit him for 1 month. We have communicated our decision to him. Amogh Lila Das has begged for forgiveness for his comments, and he realises what a great disservice he has done.”

It further read, “He has taken a vow to go on ‘prayaschit’ (atonement) for 1 month in the hills of Govardhan and will completely seclude himself from public life with immediate effect.”
