Earlier this year as well, some TikTok users started spamming ‘Waffle House has a new host’ under videos without context. The trend was a sort of inside joke among users. And now, the Zepotha trend is the latest inside-joke trend currently making the rounds on TikTok. Under the trend, users comment about a so-called indie horror movie called Zepotha, which they claim to remember watching as a child.

Meaning behind Zepotha trend on TikTok

TikTok users are currently engaged in a new trend called the ‘Zepotha’ trend, based on a fake horror movie with the same title. Under the trend, users convince themselves and others that the supposed 1987 horror movie is a real film. Although the movie was never actually made, users have started to post comments related to it. A content creator Emily Jeffri reportedly started the new trend and in one of her videos, she wrote:

“OK so new bit idea: what if we created a fake 80s horror movie called ‘Zepotha’ and started commenting ‘omg u look exactly like that one girl from Zepotha’ or ‘wait, u look exactly like ____ from Zepotha’ on every thirst trap we see.”

She further states that users will get to see new lore develop, with main characters emerging and much more. Emily also claims that users can convince thousands of other users people that the Zepotha actually exists.

TikTok users join in on the Zepotha trend

Ever since, the video was posted, it quickly went viral and has gained over 3.6 million views, While many users are joining in the fun and adding their own twist to the trend, many TikTokers who are unaware of Emily’s video, are confused and have fallen victim to the joke. This is because, they couldn’t find the supposed horror film anywhere on the internet.

Users have gone deep into the trend even creating a list of made-up queer Zepotha characters called Maxine, Alaine, Cole, and Danny. Meanwhile, some users have also created various fan art dedicated to these characters. Users have also furthered the trend by convincing other users that Zepotha is currently not available on the internet. They give the reason that the movie only exists on DVDs and VHS.
