The Americans producers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who also created the riveting series, discussed The Patient’s inspiration in-depth with Newsweek.

Does The Patient Have a True Story Behind It?

The Patient is not based on a single true incident. Instead, the fact that both co-creators, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, went to therapy and generally thought the profession was “very interesting” served as a loose inspiration for the series.

Joe Weisberg explained to Newsweek how they came up with the idea for The Patient as they were doing what TV writers do, which is wandering around trying to think about what their next show should be. Meanwhile, they started with just stuff that interests them or which they feel passionate about. Later, they started talking about the fact that they both had a lot of therapy and it is really interesting and important in their lives. This is how they came up with the idea for The Patient.

In contrast to The Patient, Fields and Weisberg’s therapy sessions did not entail a horrific serial killer or their therapist being tethered by the ankle to the bed frame. But the next stage of their creative process was coming up with an exciting plot for their upcoming show that would centre on treatment.

Real life experiences of Weisberg and Fields

Weisberg and Fields drew on their personal therapy experiences as well as extensive research into serial killers and close collaboration with therapist Dennis Palumbo to bring the story of Sam and Dr. Alan Strauss to life.

Fields stated to Newsweek that they definitely conducted some research into serial killers by reading books, papers, and films. They also spent time working with an incredible therapist named Dennis Palumbo, who is a co-producer on the project, a little bit later in the process but not too much. He’s also a writer, and he’s produced some great works about the therapeutic benefits of writing. All of that really came together for us in the form of these characters.”

Palumbo, a real-life writer and certified psychotherapist with a focus on creative concerns, may strike audiences as having a strong resemblance. and Carell’s Dr. Strauss, who is both a well-known author of books on treatment and a licenced therapist.

In order to avoid making the characters seem like cliches, Field said that they always tried to keep them feeling authentic and dimensional.
