Is Sarah Chapman Real?
Sarah Chapman was a real person. She is an important figure in the Matchgirls Strike and she was born on the 31st of October in 1862. Previously she was known for her leadership in the 1888 Bryant and May Matchgirls’ Strike. She has been recognized as a pioneer of workplace equality and women’s rights in Britain. One of seven children, Sarah Chapman was born to father Samuel Chapman and mother Sarah Ann Mackenzie. Sarah’s father served as a brewer’s servant.
Spending her early life working along with her mother and older sister as a matchmaking machinist, Sarah Chapman secured a better paid position for herself. Deciding to boycott their employers was not an easy decision. In reply to the terrible working conditions which exposed women to harmful health problems, the workforce organized a strike. Sarah Chapman championed other employees and met with a massive range of women to secure their fates.
Unsurprisingly, it was in fact an unfair dismissal of a worker that eventually led to the strike action. In July of 1888, more than 1500 workers comprised of women and young girls walked out of the factory. The strike was the first successful strike for unskilled workers based in London. The conditions of the workers would have never been improved if it wasn’t for the protest.
Differences in Reality And Film
It is sure that the film takes several creative liberties with the historical influences it relies upon. As of the film, Chapman never disappeared and with the fictional introduction of Enola into the organization of the strike.
Moreover, real-life events may not be as mysterious as they seem. A number of important figures were left out in film. Annie Besant played an important role in aiding Sarah Chapman in real life.
