Angolan Hariana Veras was born on July 22, 1984, in Malanje, Angola where she lived before immigrating to the United States to work for the Angola Embassy in Washington, DC, as Press Assistant in 2007 and left after nine years to focus on journalism.
Hariana Veras Victoria is an African Journalist, Producer and TV Host, and a White House Correspondent for Africa and also covered the Pentagon, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. State Department.
Currently based in Washigton DC, Hariana covers the Federal government of the United States, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other institutions in Washington D.C. and New York City.
Hariana who is an African by ethnicity began her journalism career at the age of 18 in Angola where she worked as a reporter at the newspaper Folha 8 and later worked for the newspaper Angolense. She worked in ORION as a TV reporter and also hosts the Hariana Show which is a television program recorded and broadcast in the United States of America and in some African countries. The program aims to keep African and non-African audiences informed about the American and international institutions’ views on the countries in Africa.
While nothing is officially known about her relationship status, some reports claim she’s married and her husband is a cinematographer. However, this is yet to be officially confirmed with Hariana herself not having shared any pictures of her partner on Instagram or having ever publicly spoken about her husband or boyfriend with some reports also claiming that she’s currently single.
During her visit to the Oval Office last week, Angolan journalist Hariana Veras, who has served as the sole African correspondent covering the White House for over a decade, engaged in a conversation with Donald Trump about the recent US-brokered peace agreement concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, the interaction took an unexpected turn when the former president chose to focus less on her journalism and more on her appearance.

Rather than addressing Veras’ reporting or delving deeper into the situation in the Congo, Trump diverted the discussion to compliment her, expressing admiration for her inner qualities. He remarked that acknowledging her beauty might jeopardize his political career, but he nonetheless praised her graciously, adding that he wished more reporters shared her demeanor. The exchange prompted laughter among others present in the room.
Veras arrived in Washington directly from the Congo to share firsthand insights into the local sentiment surrounding the peace deal. She mentioned that people in the streets were aware of Trump’s involvement and believed he had been working earnestly to bring peace to the region. She conveyed their gratitude and said she had seen hope in their eyes, something she hadn’t witnessed in years.
While Veras aimed to highlight the urgency of the long-overlooked conflict, Trump responded by complimenting her again. He recalled that his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, had advised against making such comments due to their potential to be seen as politically incorrect. Despite the caution, he reaffirmed his praise. Throughout the exchange, Veras remained composed and gracious, accepting the compliments without allowing the focus to drift from the core issues she hoped to address. The exchange, widely shared online, sparked mixed reactions and was often described as awkward given the formal context of the event.
