As the top gymnast in India, Dipa Karmakar won a gold medal in the women’s vault event in Tashkent on Sunday, becoming the first person from the nation to earn a gold medal in the Asian Senior Championships.

The 30-year-old Dipa finished first in the vault final with an average of 13.566 on the last day of competition in Uzbekistan’s capital city.

In the vault final at the 2015 Rio Olympics, Dipa took home a bronze medal. The year before, she had finished fourth in the same competition.

Dipa Karmakar, who started training for gymnastics when she was just 6 years old is the first Indian woman to compete in gymnastics at the Olympics. She placed fourth in the vault event final of the 2016 Summer Olympics.


Although she had a close call with the Olympic medal at the Rio Games, the Indian became an international celebrity and the face of gymnastics of the country because of her incredible performance. 

Karmakar made history in Glasgow, 2014, when she became the first female gymnast from India to earn a bronze medal in the history of the sport. 

She also won a bronze medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championship and ranked fifth at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in 2015, marking two more firsts for her country. 

Karmakar represented India in gymnastics at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first female athlete from the country to do so.


She also took part as the first gymnast from any discipline to represent the country in the Olympics since the Summer Olympics fifty-two years ago, in 1964.

She again made history in July 2018 when Dipa grabbed a gold medal in the vault at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey, as the first gymnast from India to do so. 

She has been awarded the Padma Shri as the fourth highest civilian honour in the Republic of India. In addition, she has been awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna by the government of India for her stunning performance in Rio Olympics 2016.
