The court is set to reveal the cricketer’s jail term, fines, or compensation in the upcoming hearing on January 10, 2024.

The Kathmandu District Court, led by Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, upheld the charges against Lamichhane during a single-judge bench hearing that began on Sunday. Despite the guilty verdict, the court established that the victim was not a minor when the crime occurred.

Lamichhane Presently Out on Bail

Initially facing charges in September 2022, Lamichhane continued to represent Nepal while on bail awaiting trial, as a lower court order for his detention was overturned by the Nepal Supreme Court in January.

A sentencing hearing is anticipated to occur early next month, and Lamichhane is presently out on bail. On the day of his conviction, Lamichhane captained PARSA Club XI to victory against Nepal Army Club in a Nepal Pro Club Championship match in Birgunj.

In September of the previous year, Lamichhane, then the Nepal captain, was suspended by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) following the issuance of an arrest warrant in Kathmandu. This came after a complaint was lodged against him, leading to his arrest upon returning to Kathmandu in October. Sandeep is unmarried and single and has a net worth of $1-5 million.

Lamichhane had declared on Facebook, just before his arrest, his commitment to cooperating in the investigation and fighting a legal battle to prove his innocence, dismissing the charges as a “conspiracy and wrongful allegation.”

Despite protests from rights groups, Lamichhane returned to the Nepal side in February, participating in a Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series at home against Namibia and Scotland.

However, he faced opposition from players of the opposing teams who did not shake his hand. Although he was not initially considered for Nepal’s squad in the Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in Dubai in early 2023, Lamichhane joined the team later as an injury replacement.

He has continued to play for Nepal, participating in events such as the ODI World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe and the ODI Asia Cup.
