Indian Premier League Purple Cap history, format, & list of all-time winners
The purple cap in the Indian Premier League is given to the bowler who recorded the most wickets during the season. This award was introduced on April 25, 2008, during the inaugural IPL season. The player with the highest total number of wickets during the competition receives the Purple Cap following the conclusion of each season’s final game. Because of his total of 22 wickets during the inaugural season, Sohail Tanvir was awarded the first Purple Cap.
In the case of a tie, the bowler who had the better economy rate would win the Purple Cap. The only players to have earned the Purple Cap twice so far are Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dwayne Bravo. The most wickets ever taken by a bowler in a single IPL season were 32 by Dwayne Bravo in the 2013 season and 32 by Harshal Patel in the 2021 season, respectively. However, according to IPL rules, Dwayne Bravo still has an advantage over Harshal Patel due to his better economy rate.
