IPL 2022 Mega Auction Date And Schedule

With the inclusion of two more franchises, IPL will become longer compared to current editions. So the IPL 2022 will have a format of 74 matches like it was in IPL 2011 when the tournament was played with 10 teams.

It will likely remain the same as that edition if the BCCI includes two more teams in the IPL 2022. The auction is scheduled to be organized in December 2021 or in January 2022.

BCCI has released some criteria and budget regarding the upcoming edition of IPL 2022 where the tender for the new two teams will be out by next month and it will be passed around October. BCCI also released a budget for the sponsorship rights and increased the total purse of each team for the auction of IPL 2022.

Format of the league stage of IPL 2022

In IPL 2022, a total of 10 teams will take part and a total of 74 matches will be played in the 15th edition of the tournament. There will be two groups where five teams will take part in each group and they will play home and away matches with the other members of the respective group.

If the BCCI continues the current home and away formula in this edition as well then they have to host 94 matches between the ten teams and it will be an impossible task by looking at a very busy International calendar. So taking this into consideration, the IPL 2022 will be played in group formats and the home and away matches will be decided as per random draw.

“We are not ready for 94 matches yet. Our broadcasters are not ready. There are issues around overseas player availability and finding a suitable window. We will consider a bigger window in future years,” a BCCI official said.

There’s also a chance of viewer fatigue if the tournament goes that long and the same has been warned by Star, the current IPL broadcaster.
