The mega auction for the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League in 2022 will be held either in December 2021 or in January 2022 after the second leg of the IPL 2021 is concluded in the UAE.
How Many New Teams for IPL 2022?
There will be two new teams for the Indian Premier League 2022 edition. One of the new franchises will be named after Ahmedabad and the second one is rumoured to be of Kanpur or Lucknow.
New Auction Rules for IPL 2022 Mega Auction?
There hasn’t been any update or clarification on this from the BCCI or the IPL Governing Council yet. Although, any major change(s) is very unlikely.
Retention and Right To Match (RTM) Rules
Traditionally the teams are allowed to retain 3 players and have 2 RTM cards for the auction. However, they can’t use RTM on any capped India player if they have already retained 3 Indian capped players before the auction.
But with the addition of two new teams this time there are chances that the teams will be given an option to retain 4 players i.e. 2 Indian+2 Overseas or 3 Indians+1 overseas with RTM so that it won’t be unfair with the two new teams. These are all just speculations and things will be cleared only when there’s an official update on this.
IPL 2022 Window
With the addition of two new teams, there will be a significant increase in the number of matches. If we go by the current system then with 10 teams there will be 94 games and it’s just not possible to get a window that long in the current jam-packed international calendar.
There will be a group system in IPL 2022 with 5 teams in 2 groups and a total of 74 matches to be played in the tournament. It will start from March to May end or the first week of June.
What will be the Purse And Salary Limit for each Franchise in IPL 2022 Mega Auction?
There are chances that the purse for each franchise will be increased ahead of the mega auction. The current purse limit is INR 85 Crores for each franchise.
First Choice Retention Price
Currently the first choice retained player gets INR 15 Crores from the franchise. There are chances that this can be increased in the IPL 2022 mega auction.
IPL Team Squad Size
The squad size for each franchise can be increased as well. The current squad limit is 25 players with a minimum of 18.
