Inter Miami brief bio and owners
Retired England legend David Beckham, currently co-owns the club along with American brothers Jorge and Jose Mas. Jorge Mas is a billionaire businessman and currently serves as the chairman and largest shareholder of MasTec. MasTec is a Miami-based construction and engineering company.
When David Beckham joined La Galaxy back in 2007 as player, one of the agreements in the deal was that he would be allowed to purchase a an MLS franchise at a discounted price to set up his own team. As such, following his retirement, Beckham and the current co-owners founded the club back in January 2018. However, the team started playing in the MLS only in 2020.
The full name of the team is Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami. The club currently holds all of their home matches at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The stadium has a capacity of around 18,000 seats.
Jorge Mas, who Forbes estimates to have a net worth of $1.3 billion, has come a long way and was born in Miami in 1963, just three years after his father, Jorge Mas Canosa.
Inter Miami current manager
Former Manchester United, Everton, and England defender Phil Neville is the current manager of Inter Miami. Neville joined the club back in 2021 after initially serving at the England women’s team.
While speaking about his current job, Neville said:
David and his ambition to make this club global was probably one of the biggest reasons. I am quite ambitious as a manager, I want to manage at the top level and the plans that David and the owners have got for this football club are huge. He wants Inter Miami to be known worldwide.’
Inter Miami players
Inter Miami has quite a list of players including former Newcastle player DeAndre Yedlin and ex-Arsenal star Kieran Gibbs. The squad also includes Alejando Pozuelo, the former Swansea midfielder and Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana, currently on loan from Wolves.
The team has had various star players in the squad in the past as well. Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain once played for the club between 2020 and 2022. He scored 29 goals across 67 appearances before eventually retiring from professional football earlier this year. Meanwhile, French World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi was also part of the Miami squad between 2020 and 2021.
Inter Miami league
Inter Miami currently play in the Major League Soccer (MLS), the USA’s premier football league. The club had competed in the league for three seasons ever since they were founded back in 2020.
During their inaugural season in 2020, Inter Miami finished 10th out of 14 in the MLS Eastern Conference. Sadly, the club slipped down to 11th place later in 2021. This season, Neville helped the club secure the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference. This helped the team secure a spot in the MLS play-offs. However, Miami lost out in the first play-offs round losing 3-0 to New York City.
