Much to the delight of Indian fans and players, the International Handball Federation has recognised India as the next big destination for Handball.
Premier Handball League (PHL) 2023 season 1
Bluesport Entertainment Pvt Ltd under the guidance of the Handball Federation of India (HFI) has the exclusive license rights of the PHL. Although the sport was initially launched in 2020, the COVID pandemic delayed the event.
The organizers launched the league to provide commercial viability and a complete makeover to Indian handball. The PHL is the first-of-its-kind competition, and is associated with the South Asian Handball Federation, which is backed by the Asian Handball Federation and the International Handball Federation.
PHL 2023 Format
The PHL season 1 will feature six teams battling it out in a round-robin format consisting of 30 matches. Following this round, the teams will then battle in three knockout matches, which will determine the ultimate champion.
The six teams will play 33 matches across a span of over 18 days, with each team playing a minimum of 10 matches each. Every team will have 17 players in their squads, where 14 of those players need to be Indian players and three foreigners.
