Although fans had high hopes from fifth-seed Indian ace PV Sindhu, she faltered in the very first-round with a defeat against Thai star Katethong. Throughout the match, Sindhu struggled against balanced play from her rival, who held her nerve to secure the win by score of 21-14, 22-20. Meanwhile, reigning Olympic champion Chen Yufei earned hard-fought victory by score of 21-19, 22-20 against Michelle Li.

Elsewhere, Saina Nehwal finally ended her winless streak after an intense victory by score of 21-17, 12-21, 21-19 to qualify for the second-round.
