Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the first Indian Art, Architecture & Design Biennale (IAADB) 2023, set against the majestic backdrop of the Red Fort. In addition to the student-focused Samunnati Biennale, PM Modi also unveiled the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design’ at Red Fort.

Along with touring the exhibition on this historic day, he also introduced a Commemorative Stamp to commemorate this important milestone. Addressing the event, PM Modi welcomed everyone to the gathering and emphasized the courtyards of the Red Fort’s historical significance—a monument to the tenacity that has endured the passing of multiple generations and maintained its essence since India’s independence.
In his speech, Modi outlined his intention to create and formalize an important Global Cultural Initiative in India that would be comparable to the well-known International Biennales that take place in cities such as Venice, São Paulo, Singapore, Sydney, and Sharjah.

In keeping with this inspirational course, the Indian Art, Architecture & Design Biennale is formalized to rejuvenate, rename, rebuild, and reorganize museums. Significant steps were also taken to enhance India’s cultural fabric with the announcement of plans for the building of cultural spaces in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Varanasi.

The IAADB is slated to take place in Red Fort, New Delhi, from December 9th to December 15th, 2023. The event is painstakingly selected to promote a vibrant cultural exchange by igniting inclusive conversations amongst artists, architects, designers, collectors, photographers, and other art professionals. - Day 1: Pravesh – Rite of Passage: Doors of India
- Day 2: Bagh e Bahar: Gardens as Universe – Gardens of India
- Day 3: Sampravah: Confluence of Communities – Baolis of India
- Day 4: Sthapatya: Anti-fragile Algorithm – Temples of India
- Day 5: Vismaya: Creative Crossover – Architectural Wonders of Independent India
- Day 6: Deshaj Bharat Design: Indigenous Designs
- Day 7: Samatva: Shaping the Built – Celebrating Women in Architecture
What’s more in it?
The Indian Art, Architecture & Design Biennale will feature panel discussions, art workshops, an art market, historic tours, pavilions centered around the aforementioned topics, and a concurrent student biennale.
Through design competitions, heritage displays, installation designs, workshops, and other events, the student biennale (Samunnati) at Lalit Kala Akademi will give students a chance to present their work, network with professionals and peers, and obtain important exposure within the architecture community.
