What is ‘Impact Player’?
The whole concept of the ‘Impact player’ is to have leverage for the teams to make substitutions during the game like Football and Basketball. Now coaches and management sitting in the dugout will have an important role in hand to make the right substitution at the right time.
Rules that need to be followed while using ‘Impact Player’
- The team sheet should include the playing 11 along with 4 substitute players who can replace anyone in the 11 when needed.
- The ‘Impact player’ can only be introduced before 14th over of an innings. The captain or coach of the team has to inform the 4th Umpire about the replacement before the 14th over of the innings.
- The replaced player can not take part in the game once he is subbed off.
- ‘Impact player’ cannot take part in any game reduced to 10 overs or less due to climatic interruption.
- The ‘Impact Player’ can only be introduced after the completion of an over or in Mid innings break.
Benefits of the ‘Impact Player’ rule in Modern day game
The ‘Impact player’ rule has a lot of benefits for the batting side.
Any team which is dealing with a batting collapse and needed an extra batter to stretch the score a bit. In that case, the Impact player can replace anyone in the 11 who has already got out and make some crucial runs for his team to avoid batting collapse.
The bowling team can also use the ‘Impact Player’ in an effective way.
There are times when a bowler is having a tough day and the bowling captain needs an extra bowler to bowl his overs. In that scenario, the ‘Impact player’ can substitute any batsman in the lineup to be the 6th bowler of the team.
BCCI is looking to introduce the ‘Impact player’ Concept in IPL 2023.
There is still no green chit from BCCI to the concept of ‘Impact Player’. The board is experimenting with the rule in the domestic tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022. If the rule comes out to be actually beneficial for the smooth conduct of the game then it will surely be seen in IPL 2023 too.
