Finland are the current reigning champions from 2022 and will be looking to defend their title.

Prior to the playoffs, the USA went undefeated in Group A to finish first in the pool. They earned six regulation wins and an overtime victory.

The teams joining the playoffs alongside the United States from Group A are Sweden, Finland and Germany.

Meanwhile in Group B, Switzerland are on top with six regulation wins and an overtime loss. The three other qualified teams are Canada, Czechia and Latvia.

2023 IIHF World Championship standings

The 2023 IIHF World Championship began with 16 countries with the teams split up into two pools of eight teams. During the group stage, each team played seven preliminary games in a round-robin format. Teams earned three points for a regulation win, and two points for an overtime win. Meanwhile, each team received one point for an overtime loss and no points for a regulation loss.

Following the end of the league stage, the top four teams from each pool then advanced to the playoffs. The playoffs begins with the quarterfinals following which it will advance to the semis. The losers meanwhile will play in a 5th-place game for seeding. The victors of the semi-finals will face off in the gold medal game. The semis losers will then play for bronze.

2023 IIHF World Championship venue

The IIHF World Championship is being held across two host countries: Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.

The games in Tampere are being played at the Nokia Arena, which is the home rink for Ilves and Tappara of Finland’s Liiga. Meanwhile, the contests in Riga are taking place at the Arena Riga. The Arena Riga is home to the Latvian national team and is the former arena of the KHL’s Dinamo Riga.

The tournament was previously scheduled to take place in Saint Petersburg, Russia. However, with the invasion of Ukraine, the IIHF banned Russia and Belarus and stripped the country’s rights to host the event.
