The Iditarod is the largest and most popular dog sled race, and this year’s competition marks its 52nd edition.

The Iditarod race, popularly referred to as “The Last Great Race on Earth,” takes place in Alaska each year.

The race features one musher and a team of 12–14 dogs racing from Anchorage to Nome, averaging 8–15 days. Musher’s need to have at least five dogs pulling the sled across the finish line to qualify for the finals.

Notably, the Iditarod takes place across two different routes, depending on which year the race takes place. The mushers travel on the northern route through towns and cities during the even years, while during the odd years, they use the southern route through Anvik and Grayling.  Both routes have different checkpoints, with the southern trail being slightly longer (998 miles) than the northern route (975 miles).
