The announcement of Pakistan as the host nation for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy was made on November 16, 2021, during the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

This marks a significant milestone for Pakistan, as it’s their first time hosting an ICC major tournament since the 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The lineup for the 2025 Champions Trophy is no accident but the result of rigorous competition. The top seven performing teams in the ongoing ODI World Cup in India will secure their passage to this grand event with India, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia all but confirmed. The schedule for the tournament isn’t out yet.

These teams will be joined by the host nation, Pakistan, who automatically qualified due to being the hosts, forming a field of eight formidable teams.

Initially known as the ICC Knockout, the Champions Trophy made its debut in 1998 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, followed by a stint in Nairobi, Kenya in 2000.

In 2002, it assumed the name “ICC Champions Trophy.” The competition initially occurred every two years until 2009, when it was relocated to South Africa due to an event cancellation in Pakistan.

The 2025 Champions Trophy follows a classical structure. Eight teams will be divided into two groups, with the top two performers from each group advancing to the semi-final stage, leading to the grand final.

However, this qualification system, approved in 2021 during an ICC board meeting, presents challenges for teams like England and Bangladesh, vying for coveted spots in the Champions Trophy.

England is in the 10th position on the World Cup standings, while Bangladesh is ninth, with both teams having only two points. With three matches left in the tournament, they must orchestrate a substantial turnaround to secure a spot in the top seven and qualify for the Champions Trophy.

The reigning Champions Trophy champions are Pakistan, who achieved this feat by defeating India in the 2017 final with a remarkable victory margin of 180 runs. This memorable victory solidified their position as a formidable force in ODI cricket.

This new qualification system ensures that even teams traditionally considered underdogs have a chance to secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
