From May 8 to 20, 2022, the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, the 12th edition of the championships were held in Istanbul, Turkey. The championships attracted 310 athletes from 72 countries, as well as the IBA Fair Chance Team.

The weight divisions were increased from ten to twelve. At the Women’s World Boxing Championships, Algeria, Kosovo, Lithuania, Mozambique, Spain, and Uzbekistan earned their first medals.

India’s Performance in 2022 Women’s World Boxing Championship

Nikhat Zareen of India has won the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Turkey, becoming the fifth Indian woman to win the title. On Thursday, the boxer defeated Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas 5-0 in the championship’s flyweight division. Zareen won the final against Jutamas by scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28. Since Olympic boxer Mary Kom won gold here in 2018, this was India’s first gold medal at the competition.

After losing in the semi-finals of the 12th edition of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul on Wednesday, Manisha and newcomer Parveen finished their campaigns with bronze medals. Manisha (57kg) and Parveen (63kg) gave it their best but lost 0-5 and 1-4 against 2020 Olympic bronze medalists Irma Testa of Italy and Amy Broadhurst of Ireland, respectively.

2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship Prize Money

The gold medalists received $100,000, the silver medalists $50,000, and the bronze medalists $25,000 in prize money. The prize pool was $2.4 million. Hence, Indian boxers earned a prize money of $150,000 after snatching one gold medal and two silver medals.

What’s Next for Nikhat Zareen?

Zareen lost the trials against Mary Kom in 2021 and did not qualify for the Olympics. She claims she has focused on improving her game since then. Zareen will now focus on the Commonwealth Games trials, where she will compete in the 50kg (110.2 lbs) division.
