Nick Kyrgios had decided to withdraw right before his first round match against Andy Murray at the Winston-Salem Open owing to his injury
Having last stepped out at the Canadian Open two weeks back where he was defeated in the first round of the competition, Nick Kyrgios was set to step out against Andy Murray in the Winston-Salem Open. The first round clash between the two on Sunday was eagerly anticipated with supporters thronging to the stadium to revel in the showdown.
However, just minutes before the encounter was set to get underway, an announcement was made, one which informed the crowd of Nick Kyrgios withdrawing from the tie. The latest development was greeted with boos with no prior information being given of the last minute decision.
Kyrgios Cites Injury As Reason For Withdrawing From Andy Murray vs Nick Kyrgios
While there was no clarification provided on Kyrgios’ withdrawal at the time as Murray went onto take on USA’s Noah Rubin who he defeated, Kyrgios has now opened up on his decision. The Australian has talked about his ongoing injury issue, one which he didn’t want to worsen owing to the impending US Open.
“I just didn’t feel as if the risk was worth today. I’ve got to be more cautious with it, keep rehabbing, keep training. “Obviously I had to look after my body and with a Grand Slam next week, I wanted to be more cautious. I have been dealing with knee pain the last couple of weeks,” he went onto say.
Kyrgios has over the course of 2021 being struggling with a knee injury, one which has hindered his performances on the court with the issue flaring up time and again.
