Perez found himself embroiled in the raft of red flags which took place in the qualifying race as the Mexican was penalised ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2021
Inclement weather paired with a tricky track saw the qualifying session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday turn into a calamitous affair. A record four stoppages took place on Saturday as a string of crashes riddled the land of Baku.
Sergio Perez was a victim of the raft of accidents which marred the race. Despite racing one of his best qualifying sessions ever, the Mexican will find himself starting in sixth place come the main event on Sunday.
Outpacing counterpart Max Verstappen for a magnitude of the race, Sergio Perez looked headed towards his first ever pole position in the land of F1. However, his aspirations went on a wayward spiral to see him finish seventh despite his progress in the RB16B.
It was down to his error which saw him lock up with McLaren’s Lando Norris. While Perez bemoaned his error, the Mexican was also quick to allude that he was two tenths up on his time till turn four.

The lock up which cost Perez time in his flying lap saw the Mexican end up with his worst track position in Q3 all weekend. And Perez was rightfully disgruntled and bereaved ensuing the race as he rued the incident.
“Also my feedback and communication with the engineers are getting better so certainly a lot of positives although I am very, very pissed off today feeling we should definitely be in the top two, on the front row at least.
“But there are a lot of positives. Tomorrow we should be able to have a strong race pace as well.”
For Red Bull, Saturday’s qualification overall was a dismal one. Leader Max Verstappen ended up in third spot, one place beneath direct rival, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
Charles Leclerc meanwhile ended up taking the pole as he ran one of his finest races this season.
