During the US Grand Prix last weekend, Williams announced that F2 driver Logan Sargeant will join Alex Albon in the 2023 season if Logan qualifies for an FIA F1 super license. Williams has decided to part ways with Nicolas Latifi for the upcoming season. Latifi, who debuted in Formula One with Williams in 2020, has been with the team since. However, he was unable to outperform his competitors, scoring only nine points for Williams to date. This is the primary reason Williams decided to part ways with Latifi.

Nicolas Latifi’s seat has since been vacant for the 2023 season, but it may not be long before Williams fills the vacancy, as Williams CEO Jon Capito made an announcement regarding Logan Sargeant.
“We believe he is ready to race.” He will be our second driver next year, assuming he has enough super licence points.”

Jost Capito, the team’s CEO, stated that American F2 driver Logan Sargeant will obtain the team’s second seat in 2023 if he gets enough points in the final races to qualify for an FIA Super License to participate next year. Sargeant would be the first American driver to compete in Formula One since Alexander Rossi for Manor in 2015. Since Mario Andretti’s victory in 1978, no American has won an F1 Grand Prix.
Sargeant’s place at Williams may be more realistic because the 22-year-old driver already races in an F1 feeder series and would have enough points to race in the top tier next year if he finished sixth or better. Sargeant is currently ranked third in F2.
He has 27 points from his Formula 3 results and picked up a bonus point for driving FP1 at the United States Grand Prix on Friday and should be eligible for a further two bonus points for completing the entire 2021 F3 season without getting licence penalty points. On top of that, two more bonus points will come if he has an incident-free weekend in Abu Dhabi and as Williams has decided to field Sargeant in Mexico and Abu Dhabi for FP1, a further two bonus points can be earned on those performances.
This could bring Sargeant up to a whopping 34 superlicence points, making an eighth-place finish in the F2 championship enough to reach the 40-point threshold to qualify for an F1 superlicence and given that he is 21 points behind ninth in the F2 standings, it is very likely that Sargeant will be able to secure a superlicence.
