Manchester United finished the 2020-21 season in 2nd place, behind their city rivals Manchester City. Here’s how Manchester United could line up for the upcoming season.
Manchester United managed to reach the Europa League final where they fell short after an intriguing penalty shoot-out. Whether the season was a success entirely depends on what the fans expected and the objectives of the club.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now been at the club for 2 years and the pressure on him and Manchester United is mounting. A trophy less season can never be accepted at Old Trafford. United need to strengthen in many areas and have already began to do so. If all the rumours and possible transfers go through, let us look at how Manchester United can line-up next season.

How Manchester United Could Line Up For The New Season: Manchester United’s Defense
Starting between the post, United have David de Gea and Dean Henderson. The Red Devils have struggled in this area with some unforced errors from both but looking at the transfer budget and other positions, United would probably stick with the Spanish and England international.
Ole has improved the defense getting the best out off Luke Shaw and Wan Bissaka. Harry Maguire has done good leading the line from the back but rumours of Varane is something to look at. The arrival of Varane would be complicated as Real Madrid would not let him go easily. Rumours surrounding Trippier have taken shape too. Not many changes are expected at the moment in the backline.
Ideal defense line-up
- Goalkeeper : David de Gea
- Left Back : Luke Shaw/Alex Telles
- Right Back : Wan Bissaka/Kieran Trippier
- Centre Back : Maguire and Lindelof (Tuanzebe/ Bailly)
The Manchester United Midfield With Jack Grealish
The area of the field where Manchester United have improved a little but need new faces. Ole generally lineups with 2 defensive midfielders and 1 attacking midfielder. Mc Tominay and Paul Pogba play as the defensive midfielders with Pogba at times making runs from deep.
Manchester United signed Donny Van de Beek but he has not featured much under Ole this season. With Fred, Matic and Mata as backups, new faces are needed.
Jack Grealish is one of the first names on United’s transfer list with Manchester City also chasing the highly rated attacking midfielder. With only year left in his contract, Paul Pogba’s future is also under doubt.
A possible departure will bring in funds which can fund the possible arrival of Kessie from AC Milan. Bringing in another defensive midfielder depends on the future of Pogba and Van de Beek.
Ideal midfield line-up
- Defensive midfield : Mc Tominay and Kessie / Pogba
- Attacking midfield : Bruno Fernandes ( Jack Grealish )
Manchester United frontline With Jadon Sancho
Manchester United have always had a frontline that would scare any opponent but over the years that element has been missing. The summer window is a great opportunity to strengthen their front three. Edison Cavani recently signed a 1 year extension, which would have made United fans quiet happy. With many young players at disposal, Ole has to make the correct decisions.
“I am very happy that it has happened, but that does not mean that we are not looking for someone who can challenge or learn from him,” were the words of Ole after Cavani signed a new 1 year deal.
Jadon Sancho who has been a target for past 2 season might play at Old Trafford next season. After impressing with West Ham, Ole has to take make the final verdict on Jesse Lingard which could possibly be a departure.
Daniel James can also be on his way out alongside Anthony Martial. This would allow Jadon Sancho to play from the right hand side. Kingsley Coman is the backup option if the Sancho deals does not go through.
Martial’s departure would give rise to many possibilities. Mason Greenwood could play as a number 9 with Cavani. If Ole decides to play Greenwood from right, the door is open for a new signing. Linked with Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, if any of those go through it would be a boost for United. Dominic Calvert Lewin with Andre Silva have also emerged as targets.
Ideal frontline of United
- Right Wing : Jadon Sancho (Mason Greenwood)
- Left Wing : Marcus Rashford (Kingsley Coman / Amad Diallo)
- Centre Forward : Andre Silva (Cavani / Calvert Lewin)
Manchester United are expected to challenge for the Premier League title next season. Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are looking to increase their strength too. United need to have a big transfer window or else it would be another disappointing season for the Red Devils.
