Susanne Schaefer, his partner, confirmed his abrupt and unexpected death, which she attributed to a heart arrest that occurred during the night. The defender was a key member of the West Germany side that lost bitterly to Argentina in the 1986 World Cup final. But four years later in Italy, Brehme not only played but also sealed the win with a penalty kick in the 85th minute.

Andreas Brehme began his career with HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst and had a notable career at clubs like 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan. Achieving Bundesliga and Serie A titles, he concluded his playing career with 301 matches.
