Gary Brown, the coach of the Wisconsin running backs in 2021, died at the age of 52
The cause of death is illness and Brown was unable to go with the team to the Las Vegas Bowl in December due to health concerns, prompting Amherst native Garrett Groshek to step in for the game. Brown had already been diagnosed with cancer twice, the most recent time in 2019. Hill has been in hospice care for the past few weeks, according to sources.
Brown was a star running back for Penn State in 1988, rushing for 689 yards and six touchdowns. He was picked by the Houston Oilers in the sixth round of the 1991 NFL draught, beginning an eight-year career with the Oilers and the New York Giants.
Brown began a long coaching career after retiring, with stops with the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys until landing at Wisconsin last season.
"Gary Brown had a big 💙 partnered with a big smile & a big personality. His energy & spirit were infectious. He lit up every room he walked into & touched the lives of those who knew him in such a positive way…” – Jerry Jones
